The Cottonwood Clippers swim team will compete in their summer finale this Saturday.
After a couple months of traveling around central and northern Arizona, the Clippers will finally enjoy a meet in their own waters. Races begin at 8 a.m. at the Cottonwood City Pool, located behind the public library.
Teams from Sedona and Kingman will join the Clippers' annual invitational. A couple other squads may come as well. The meet will last until the early afternoon.
The Clippers have enjoyed a banner summer, according to coach Rick Heisley. The team has won a couple meets, and individual swimmers have broken several records — some more than once during the course of the season.
A record number of swimmers turned out – about 110 in all – and about 80 competed in most meets. Seventy-two Clippers completed their mile swims during a recent fund-raiser.
"We've got a lot of new talent," Heisley said. "We found some good new prospects for the high school team."
Heisley, who also coaches the Marauder swimmers, will begin workouts with the high school team on Aug. 13. Practices will start at 6 p.m. at the city pool. Anyone wishing to come out for the squad can contact Heisley for more information at 634-4553.
