Things fell into place perfectly as the Marauders placed second in Friday’s Verde Santa Fe Invitational. Havasu, one of 4A’s most dominant teams this season, won with a 292 team total. Mingus finished seven strokes behind at 299 and beat region rival Sinagua by 15.
Moon Valley placed a distant fourth at 328, followed by Mohave 342, Page 345 and Cortez 357. The Marauders won their own tournament a year ago.
“We did very well,” said coach John Uidenich.
Junior Stephen Cook won individual honors, carding a one-under-par 71. Dylan Miles came in fourth with a 73. Corey Lay shot in the 70s for the first time this season, finishing at 76.
Last year’s champion, Jacob Gould, fired an 80, while Miles Latimer recorded an 87. The top four scores from each school comprised the team total, with the fifth score discarded.
Latimer had a great back nine, engineering a 39 after shooting a 48 on the front. Cody Harkey led the way for Mingus Union’s “B” team, firing a 78.
“We’ve got to keep working,” Uidenich said. “Next week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll be playing for a region trophy at the same place (Verde Santa Fe). And Sinagua is going to be back.”
The region champion will then advance to the 4A state championships.
