Raffle proceeds to benefit child's play loft at VVMC

A little cooperation from the community is going to benefit Verde Valley Medical Center's level of pediatric care.

The Foundation at VVMC is currently selling raffle tickets for a child's play loft. Tickets are three for $10 and the winner will be chosen on April 8.

The play loft wasn't just bought and bestowed by some donor. A generous volunteer did buy the plans for the loft, according to Myrtis Capps, director of the Foundation at VVMC.

Then students at Mingus High School built it and a local artist put the finishing touches on it.

"It is absolutely as cute as it can be," Capps said of the loft.

Jane Florance of Colored Rain Studio in Clarkdale said she was approached to paint the loft and was on board right away.

"I thought oh yeah, that sounds great," she said. "I had a lot of fun doing it."

Capps said there is a need for more of a new space for the hospital's pediatric patients.

"The reason we're doing this is there is a need to separate pediatrics from adults in the hospital," Capps said. "Also there is not room in most of our rooms for the parent to stay in the room with the child."

Capps said there is also a goal to create a playroom for younger patients.

The play loft raffle is just the beginning for the money raising efforts. The hospital will soon kick off "Pediatric House Calls." The house calls will be parties in volunteer homes to help raise funds. VVMC pediatricians are expected to attend and provide party guests with information on the hospital's pediatric programs.

"We have the backing of our pediatricians," Capps said.

Raffle tickets are being sold at VVMC and at Red Rock Pediatrics, 301 S. Willard St. in Cottonwood.
