In mid July the Cottonwood Middle School Lobos formed a theme not to be satisfied.
"We keep telling our guys to celebrate the win till the next practice, but don't get satisfied," said coach Jack Gebhart."
The Lobos stayed focused all season long with last year's reminder going 10-0-1. The only blemish was an 8-8 tie with Prescott.
Well in the Lobos' final two games, they completed the perfect season they set out to get all year long.
"We got a little satisfied last year, we knew we were a better team than that," said coach Gebhart. "The coaches are proud of the kids they worked hard and stayed hungry. We rattled a few chains and the team responded."
The Cottonwood Middle School Lobos football team pounded Payson 48-20 with tough, hard hitting. Payson had been able to dominate their league by out-hitting their opponents, but against the Lobos, it just didn't happen.
"We knew we could control the game by being physical and the Lobos did just that," said coach Gebhart.
Paul Bissen scored on the Lobos' fourth play from scrimmage with a 32-yard run for a 6-0 lead. Early in the second quarter Nick Alred scored on a 68-yard QB boot and Carson Sandoval converted the PAT run, stretching the Lobos lead 14-0.
The Lobos closed out the half on a 36-yard touchdown by Bissen. Alred completed the PAT pass to Matt Chavez for a 22-0 lead at the half.
Payson started the second half scoring on a 39-yard run, which made the score 22-8. The Lobos answered back with a 5-yard Bissen touchdown. Alred followed with a 1-yard run and converted the PAT upping the score to 36-8.
Payson wasn't ready to give up yet and scored on a 48-yard run. Again, the Lobos retaliated with a Sandoval 41-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed making the score 42-14. Payson scored for the final time on a 45-yard run. Greg Childress added to the score on a 30-yard run for a 48-20 victory. Tanner Selman earned Lobo of the Week honors.
For their final game, the Lobos traveled to Casa Grande for the final game and dominated the Cougars, 50-6. Sandoval started with two touchdown runs. The first on a 33-yard run and the second on a 50-yard run. Bissen converted the PAT for a quick 14-0 lead.
The next score came off an Nick Alred to Sandoval 31-yard pass. Vinnie Miller converted the PAT 22-0. Bissen scored next on a 15-yard run for a 28-0 lead to end the quarter.
Alred connected with Sandoval in the air twice for pay-dirt. One from 46-yards and the other from 72-yards, upping the score to 42-0.
Vinnie Miller recovered a botched Cougar on-side kick for a 50 yard score, Alred hit Miller for the PAT for the final score.
Earning Lobo of the week honors are the "2006 Lobos"
