Camp Verde boys soccer wins season opener

Frank Woodford knocked in the only goal of the game to help give the Camp Verde boys soccer team a 1-0 victory over Northland Prep and their first win of the season.

With butterflies all around for the Cowboys season opener, the team's defense held strong and limited Northland Prep to only two shots on goal while Camp Verde fired off 12.

The first half went scoreless by both teams, despite many efforts. The Cowboys stayed strong on defense and tried to get the ball into the goal.

Thirteen minutes passed in the second half before Woodford found the back of the goal with the assist from Austin Beeler.

"We are trying to play strong defense," coach Dave Miller said. "Once they have the confidence to not have to come from behind, then they can work on scoring, which is more of an art."

Starting for the Cowboys is Woodford, who is a first-year player, Austin Beeler, Will Allen, Ryan Emory, Zeb Dickenson, Ben Bassous, Judah Landavaso, Victor Romero, Mike Bux, Lorenzo Reyes and Mike Wales in the goalie position.

"While the other team was on their fifth game, we are still putting things together," coach Miller said. "Will and Austin led well and are the heart of the team."

Camp Verde will play a decent Verde Valley team on the road on Saturday at 1 p.m.
