Lobos on the hunt

The Cottonwood Middle School Lobos picked up two wins last week. First the Lobos traveled to Granite Mountain on Wednesday and then took on the Mile High Badgers Saturday.

The Lobos started the Granite Mountain game by recovering an onside kick on Granite Mountain's 48-yard line. On the first play Nick Alred connected for a 48-yard pass to Carson Sandoval for six, the PAT kick failed.

The Lobo defense sacked the Granite Mountain punter on its own 20-yard line. Two plays later Logan Couch scored on a 20-yard run, the PAT kicked failed. Sandoval upped the score on a nine-yard run. Matt Rothlauf caught an Alred pass for the PAT to end the first quarter 20-0.

Three plays into the second quarter Sandoval broke through for a 40-yard run, Paul Bissen kicked the pat for a 27-0 Lobo lead. 1:35 into the second quarter the game was called due to lightning, 27-0.

The Mile High Badgers rolled into the Lobo Den on Saturday all fired up and ready to play. Last season the Badgers put the only blemish on the Lobos' near-perfect season with an 8-8 tie.

The Lobos came out flat and gave up a 53-yard drive in seven plays putting the Badgers on the Lobo seven-yard line. The Lobo defense stiffened, holding the Badgers in four plays. The Lobo offense scored four plays later on a 35-yard run by Sandoval. Alred completed a three-yard pass to Sandoval for the PAT and the Lobos jumped to an 8-0 lead.

On the Lobos' next possession, Paul Bissen scored on a 20-yard run, the PAT kick failed. Sandoval scored again on a 44-yard run, the PAT failed.

With nine seconds left in the first half, Alred hit Sandoval on a 49-yard pass. Matt Rothlauf caught a pass by Alred for the PAT and the first half ended with the Lobos up, 28-0. The Lobo defense blocked two Badger punts and Sandoval returned one for a 30-yard score, Paul Bissen kicked the PAT for a final score 35-0.

The Lobo line started slowly but recovered quite well controlling the tempo and the line of scrimmage, led by Todd Scalf, Brian Whitworth, Andrew Pierce, Vinny Miller, Darryl Gregson, Raul Gonzales, Fernando Anguiano, Doug Yatsinko, Ian Gilbert, Brandon Howard and Tyler Palossari.

The Lobos are 4-0 for the season. Next week the Lobos take on Casa Grande on Sat. the 16th in the Lobo den at 11 a.m.
