Over 55 bull riders from around the Southwest competed for over $4000 in prize money in the inaugural Steve Coury Championship Bull riding produced by Steve Coury Automotive Family and Camp Verde Wrestling.
The event was held in Camp Verde, AZ at the Steve Coury GMC dealership. It was an official stop of the All American Tour produced by Casper Baca from Grants, NM.
The spectators were treated to some exciting rides and bone crushing wrecks. The crowd was entertained by local Rodeo clown Bob Weir with his on going antics and acts. The bullfighters did a terrific job of protecting the cowboys. The bullfighters were Scub Steve Strickland and Travis Chavez.
The rodeo announcer kept the bull riding moving smoothly and entertaining commentary by Cylde McBride from Kayenta, AZ. The championship bulls were supplied by Casper Baca Rodeo Company from "the Home of the champions" Grants, N.M.
All of the proceeds will go to the 2006 2A State Champion Camp Verde Wrestling team. Former Camp Verde wrestlers competing in the event were Diaz, who won the Novice bull Riding Championship and he was a state placer for Camp Verde High School. Another former wrestlers was Randell Watson, who placed 5th in State his senior year in 2005. He is currently in the top 80 in the PBR national standings and is last year's Grand Canyon Professional Rodeo Association Champion and is leading the GCPRA this year by over $1800.
On Saturday Night the top five scores from that night's rides came back for a winner take all $600 in the Memory of Jim Knox a champion bull rider who was from the Verde Valley. It was sponsored by: Yavapai Gading, Doug's Dirt Works, Verde Underground, Rocky Construction, Waylon Forester, and Barker Fitness Center.
The winner was Spud Jones with an 88 point ride. Randell Watson was the closest with a 7.94 second ride on the bull called Steve Coury. The event was a great success and the spectators were very involved and entertained.
