Phoenix Cement Company, with its marketing entity Salt River Materials Group, has filed an application with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for an expedited air quality permit to expand its Clarkdale plant.
Rapid growth in Arizona has led to periods of insufficient cement supply and a significant reliance on imports from outside the state and country. By 2030, Arizona's population is projected to further increase by 70 percent, with corresponding cement consumption increases of 43 percent.
Phoenix Cement Company has made a commitment to the State of Arizona to help bolster the local supply of portland cement, the primary ingredient in concrete, by expanding production capability at its Clarkdale Plant.
The new cement manufacturing line would add approximately 5,000 tons per day to the current operating capacity of 3,500 tons per day.
"Phoenix Cement Company is committed to supplying the materials needed for regional development in an environmentally responsible manner," said Verle Martz, vice president of engineering and environment. "The new production line will adhere to strict energy standards already in place at the plant."
The Clarkdale plant recently was honored with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR® award. The plant scored a 97 out of a possible 100 on the Energy Performance Indicator used by the EPA to establish energy efficiency.
In order to qualify for an ENERGY STAR award, a score of at least 75 is required and the company must have a three-year history of complying with several other environmental regulations.
In preparation for the expansion and the submittal process, Phoenix Cement Company has worked with Original Equipment Manufacturers, contractors and ADEQ to ensure an expedited process for the proposed project.
Phoenix Cement Company and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community have a rich history of providing excellent jobs for Arizona and the local communities they serve and are committed to managing natural and other material resources to insure that the needs of future generations will be met.
