Glenn R. Compton, 86, of Cottonwood, died Jan. 17, 2008. Glenn was born in Flagstaff on May 28, 1921, to Frank F. and Margaret R. (Curry) Compton. The Compton family was part of the pioneering of early Flagstaff.

Glenn grew up in Flagstaff, graduating from Flagstaff High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, was in the Medical Corps assigned to the Marines, and served in the Pacific Theater, including Iwo Jima, during World War II.

Glenn became a mortician and owned Flagstaff Mortuary. He graduated from ASC at Flagstaff (NAU) in 1948 with a Bachelors of Science in Education. Later he began teaching at Mount Elden Elementary School (Killip) in Flagstaff in 1962 and retired in 1983. Soon after retiring, Glenn and his wife Kay moved to Cottonwood. Kay died almost three years ago.

Glenn was an active member of the American Legion, holding positions of past commander of Post 3 and Area C vice commander of the Arizona Department of the American Legion. He was assistant director of Arizona's Boys State and attended every session since 1947.

Glenn is survived by his sons, James of Mesa, Glenn (Bonnie) of Phoenix, and Charles (Debbie) of Flagstaff. He is also survived by two grandsons; and a brother, Ted Compton.

Memorial services are today, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m., Mtn. View United Methodist Church, 901 S. 12th St., Cottonwood. Internment is Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix.
