One of the biggest news stories in the last month is being gernerally ignored by the liberal media. The Marines have turned over security control in Anbar province to Iraqi security forces. 2 years ago I dreaded to look at the daily casualty figures, knowing 2 or 3 young marines would be listed, killed in or around Ramadi. One intelligence report at that time even stated that the battle was lost. But the marines had other ideas. They began working at the grass roots level, working with men who were tired of seeing their families - men, women and children, murdered by religious fanatics in the name of jihad. The marines are moving into a back-up role now. Still training Iraqi soldiers and police, they will be there, on call, if Iraqi forces cannot handle a "surge in violence". If the Iraqis prove up to the job, the Corps will be able to shift some units to Afghanistan where things are getting worse. The terrorists are using false propaganda to turn the people against the government. Karzai has even ordered that attacks in civilian areas be halted. That is exactly where the terrorists launch their assaults from and plays right into their hands.
