October retail sales tax up throughout Verde Valley

Sedona still dropping in retail, total revenue

VERDE VALLEY -- Jerome and Camp Verde both showed increases for October in retail sales tax collections over the same month last year. Those two towns gained in the retail category without sales tax increases. Jerome's increase in sales tax will not take effect until after the first of the year. Jerome also showed an increase in the total sales tax and year-to-date categories.

Cottonwood and Clarkdale, with the help of tax increases, also showed gains over last year in retail sales revenue for October. Cottonwood's total sales tax collections for all categories rose steeply from last year.

Sedona is the only community in the greater Verde Valley to show a drop for October in retail, total and year-to-date categories.

According to the Arizona Department of Revenue, Cottonwood took in $556,493 in retail sales tax for October, an increase from $428,855 for the same month last year. Total sales tax collections climbed from $728,262 for Oct. 08 to $903,990 this year. Year-to-date sales tax revenue jumped from $3,104,221 last year to $3,572,752 this year.

Camp Verde saw an increase in retail sales tax for October from $42,073 in 2008 to $44,157 this year. Total sales tax revenue dropped from $179,530 in Oct. 08 to $157,396 this October. Year-to-date sales tax revenue also dropped, with $675,253 collected in Oct. 09, compared with $767,597 collected in October last year.

Clarkdale also saw an increase in retail sales tax revenue for October from $4,605 in 2008 to $4,828 in 2009. But it was a different story for total sales tax collections, with a drop from $90,824 in 08 to $49,795 in 09. Year-to-date sales tax is down from $268,811 in 08 to $194,595 for this October.

Jerome showed an increase in all three categories for October. Retail sales tax climbed from $15,444 last year to $17,240 this year. Total sales tax for the month also went up to $41,571 this year from $38,788 last year. Year-to-date sales tax revenue is up slightly to $156,131 this October from $155,800 last year.

Sedona dropped in sale tax collections in all three categories from October of last year. Retail tax revenue for October was $254,649, compared with $279,071 for last year. Total sales tax collected in October dropped significantly from $1,601,792 for Oct. 08 to $1,089,433. Year-to-date sales tax revenue has dropped sharply in October to $4,154,205 from $4,963,058 last year.
