Camp Verde woman involved in fatal accident

A vehicle driven by Israel Ruiz, 30, of Glendale, hit a concrete barrier and went across the median into the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 Saturday just before 7 p.m. The collision occurred one mile south of Cordes Junction. A northbound motorcycle then struck the Ruiz vehicle and landed in the high-speed lane. Another northbound vehicle, driven by Jessica Vandermarr, 33, of Camp Verde, then struck the motorcycle driver.

Terry Steven Scully, 56, who was thrown from his motorcycle, was lying in the roadway when he was struck by the Vandermarr car. Scully was reportedly dead at the scene. However, a passenger on the motorcycle was admitted to a Phoenix hospital with severe injuries. No one else was injured in the collision.

Neither of the riders on the motorcycle wore helmets and investigators believe a helmet would have lessened the injuries sustained by the passenger.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
