Man killed in Interstate rollover

STONEMAN LAKE - A 58-year-old Phoenix man was killed when he was ejected from his rolling vehicle on Interstate 17 Saturday.

A pickup truck, pulling a towing dolly, left the road at the Stoneman Lake interchange. The trailer separated from the truck; the pickup rolled and then returned to the freeway.

Gilbert Alvarez was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 5:15 p.m. accident.

Another man who was a passenger in the vehicle was suspected to have multiple traumas and was flown by medical helicopter to the Flagstaff Medical Center.

Rough ride through Interstate median

VERDE VALLEY - Shortly after 9 a.m. Monday morning, a vehicle headed south on Interstate 17, drove off the highway and through the median. The vehicle did not roll over, but the Montezuma-Rimrock Fire captain said the occupants had a "rough ride."

The car went about 200 feet through the median before coming to a rest near the shoulder of the northbound lane.

One occupant was flown to the Flagstaff Medical Center with possible spinal injuries. Three others were taken by ground ambulance to the Verde Valley Medical Center.

In addition to Montezuma-Rimrock, Sedona Fire and Guardian Air assisted with the call.
