One Letter at a Time

Kelleen Buchanan proved she knew “zilch” about spelling, winning Camp Verde Middle School’s annual spelling bee on Wednesday morning on that word. Kelleen, an eighth grader, outlasted sixth grader Allee Drake in the final round. Separately among the fifth graders, it was a bit a of a duel between Sarah Hood and Reina Velez - for the first time the fifth graders took more rounds than the entire middle school - but Sarah correctly spelled “sunstroke” to take the title. The winners go on to compete in the Yavapai County Spelling Bee in February. The runners-up serve as alternates.
