Miriam C. Youmans 1940 - 2010

Miriam Celestine Youmans

Miriam Celestine Youmans

Miriam Celestine Youmans was born on October 12, 1940, in Ridgeland (Jasper County), South Carolina to the late Wilhelmina Smith Youmans and Hayes Herbert Youmans.

She graduated with honors from Lucy Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia in June 1957 and was the marching band’s head majorette (she was a mean baton twirler!). Miriam was always very athletic and participated in team sports during her school years. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from Bowie State University at the age of 50 and graduated Cum Laude. Our family was very proud of her!

Her wifely duties afforded her travels and residences all over the United States and globally, having homes in Frankfurt, West Germany and Naha, Okinawa and visits to far away places such as Monaco, Hong Kong, Bogota and Sao Paolo. After many years residing and working in the Washington D.C./Virginia area, Miriam retired and moved to Sedona, Arizona in the spring of 2000. She was a wife of thirty-five years to a decorated active duty Airman, USAF-Ret. Sr.M/SGT K. C. Hurry and spent many years in service of her country as well; being highly decorated and many times acknowledged for her outstanding management skills and leadership qualities, reaching the level of GS-13.

In addition to Miriam’s spiritual interests and abilities, she was a very successful real estate professional helping many Sedona-area families with their home sales and purchases.

Miriam loved music, the cinema, traveling, dancing, antiques, fine art, and collectibles and was a fantastic cook and baker. She is thought of and remembered as a person of good taste and charm; she was remarkably bright, kind, extremely generous and had a disarming mega-watt smile. “She never met a stranger”. Miriam raised two, now grown children, which she was extremely proud of and was always happy to spend time with her much beloved Grandchildren, family members and friends.

She is survived by her son, Barry A. Hurry and his wife Christina; their children Amber Louise and George Peter Hurry of Ripon, U.K., her daughter Zoe Hurry Hancock and husband Daniel T. Hancock of Phoenix, Arizona, and her former husband Kit Carson Hurry of Milford, DE. Her Sisters: Madeline Heilman, Vivian Banks, Audrey Rhodes, Shirley Wright, Rita Williams and her Brother, Charles Albert Youmans, M.D., as well as her brother-in-laws Dr. Harold D. Banks and Allen Rhodes and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Miriam Celestine Youman’s family, friends and acquaintances will be held on Friday, January 29th, 2010 in the Village of Oak Creek at Canyon Moon Theatre in the Outlet Mall at 6601 Hwy. 179, Sedona, AZ 86351-8991 from 10 a.m. to noon. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to Doctors without Borders or The American Red Cross.
