About 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, a Yavapai County sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on Forest Road 104 at the top of Mingus Mountain. The vehicle contained one man.
During the contact, shots were fired and the driver fled out of sight. A short time later, the deputy found the vehicle about one mile away but the driver was gone.
While searching the area around the vehicle for the subject, the deputy discovered the driver deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The officer recovered a handgun, found next to the man. The Sheriff's Office says, the dead man was not struck by any of the deputy's rounds.
The scene was contained pending arrival of officers from the Department of Public Safety Shooting Team who will investigate the incident.
The deceased man's name is being withheld pending notification to family members.
The deputy has been place on administrative leave and his name will be provided in a future release as per YCSO policy.
