105 Candles for Althea Burns

About 60 members of Althea Burns extended family joined in celebration of her 105th birthday on Saturday at the Mountain View United Methodist Church in Cottonwood. Althea moved with her husband and five children to Cottonwood in 1955. Her husband, Nelson Burns, passed in 2009 – the couple was married for 66 years. Althea maintains a duplex in Cottonwood, continues to be active in her church and loves to entertain family. Family members from Nevada, California, Utah and New Mexico traveled to Cottonwood to help celebrate Althea’s birthday. At the celebration, Althea read a poem titled, “Ode to Age,” that she has been crafting and altering for 13 years – the last lines read, “Sweeter as the years go by. With you Dear Jesus, my wonderful family and friends, it is good to be alive, healthy and happy at 105.” Althea Burns (seated) is surrounded by her immediate family: Mary Hughes, John Burns, Elaine Hansen and Tom Burns during Althea’s 105th birthday celebration.
