VOC pedestrian killed on Interstate

RIMROCK - A 77-year-old Village of Oak Creek woman was killed Friday night on Interstate 17, two miles south of the Sedona Interchange.

The Department of Public Safety says that two vehicles, a pickup truck and a passenger car, were driving together southbound, when clothing from luggage in the truck became airborne and flew into the highway.

The driver of the trailing car saw the clothing and pulled off to pick it up. She reportedly waited for cars to pass and then walked into the roadway.

At the same time, an unrelated driver from Everett, Wash., was also driving southbound in the slow lane. He swerved into the high-speed lane to avoid running over the clothing and did not see the older woman. She was struck and killed instantly, according to Montezuma-Rimrock Fire crews.

She has been identified as 77-year old Ursula Somoza of the Village of Oak Creek. The family had reportedly been on a trip to Mexico.
