The 2.5-percent increase in employees’ salaries and benefits in Cottonwood’s 2012 budget is shameful, disgraceful, selfish, uncaring, arrogant and un-American.
Government employees are the servants of the people who pay the taxes. which pays their salaries/benefits. Therefore, the taxpayers are the boss; not the other way round.
The U.S. Congress denied the usual annual cost-of-living allowances to government retirees in 2010, 2011, and probably 2012. They are struggling to pay their bills in the present economic depression on reduced incomes.
The population of the Verde Villages is higher than that of Cottonwood. The Villagers pay sales taxes to Cottonwood, which constitutes an important source of revenue for the city.
The Villages are unincorporated making this situation a classic example of “taxation without representation.” The 2.5-percent increase, therefore, demonstrates a “damn the taxpayer attitude.”
The City Council members must resign for approving this dastardly action. The city manager and the city finance director should be fired for proposing the increase.
The Cottonwood city government employees should issue a public statement declining the 2.5-percent increase. It is the true patriotic American action to take indicating their recognition of the toll the economic depression is inflicting on the residents of the Valley.
Should the master be punished for the sake of the servants?
