Back in October before the election, Mitch McConnell, the top Senate Republican, made the GOP agenda very clear when he stated that “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president,” clearly indicating a willingness to put politics ahead of good sound governance.
In that context, almost everything the GOP has done since the election makes sense. They were all about jobs back then, but since taking office have done nothing to stimulate job growth in the economy. They have been all about deficit reduction since the election, yet during the Bush administration when the deficits were out of control there was virtual silence from them on the subject.
Their current tactic of slashing spending in the face of a weak economy will only serve to make any economic recovery slower than it would otherwise be. Their threat to block any increase in the debt limit will not only put our own economy at grave risk, but also jeopardize the world economy.
By attempting to choke off any sort of economic recovery, they are putting us at serious risk of sliding back into a recession and quite possibly a depression. It is nothing short of despicable that one of our national parties is willing to hold so many people as economic hostages all for the purpose of trying to unseat President Obama in 2012.
