The Autumn Gallery Season kicks off with a special reception at Lanning Gallery during Sedona's "1st Friday Gallery Tour" event Oct. 7, 5-8 pm. The exhibition "Cynthia Reid: Vignettes" opens with an artist's reception for the Tucson artist whose Contemporary Impressionist paintings have developed quite a following.

While she continues to paint the landscapes and still lifes her collectors count on, Reid has lately turned her considerable skills to painting what she calls "vignettes." These new works are designed to leave room within their composition for viewers to complete the story of the piece. And so, to each viewer, a unique experience is had - one constructed by their own imagination. This promises to make the opening exhibition quite a lot more interactive and fun than simply, though enjoyably, looking at art.

As Reid explains it: "The effect of my vignettes is different from that of ... traditional landscapes [which] provide more complete scenes ... in and of themselves, and don't demand the same kind of engagement of the imagination as do vignettes. At the same time, because vignettes have representational qualities, they function very differently from abstract paintings in that they make more of a storytelling demand on the viewer than a psychological demand."

Reid, a juried member of the Oil Painters of America, has come a long way since her 1st place win as an emerging artist in the 2003 juried Members Show at the Sedona Arts Center. In fact it's hard to remember that she left a thriving career as a physician to follow her life-long artistic passions. The finesse of her talents has only grown with time.

Reid's rich color palette and her sculptural palette-knife technique remain eternally engaging - whether she is capturing a riotous field of sunflowers, a bird's nest tucked into forest foliage, a simple party dress on a hanger or a tiny lone bird on the edge of an ancient stone fountain. Reid paints worlds whose stories you want to create.
