Cottonwood-Clarkdale highway sidewalk awarded

The Arizona State Transportation Board, meeting Friday in Tusayan, awarded a contract to build a sidewalk between along the four-lane highway section of SR 89a between Black Hills Drive in Cottonwood and Cement Plant Road in Clarkdale.

The Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant will also accommodate handrails where needed and decorative boulders to be placed on the now barren roundabouts. There are five roundabouts in the section

The lack of sidewalks along the stretch has been something of a sore point since the road construction is complete. Clarkdale Manager Gayle Mabery said, some pedestrians have taken to walking on the narrow divider in the middle of the highway between the two directional lanes.

Pictures of those walkers have been sent to ADOT to show the need for sidewalks.

The entire project is programmed for $1,415,000. Eight contractors competed for the contract along the 2.2 mile road section.

Michael J. Valente Contracting won the bid for the sidewalk, asking $645,043.00, a bid greater than 25-percent less than engineer's estimates for the project.

ADOT spokesman Bill Pederson said Friday that construction is expected to start in October and be completed in two and a half months time.
