Carol Cathryn Koontz 1930-2012

Carol Cathryn Koontz, 82, of Cottonwood, died April 10, 2012. She was born August 19, 1930 in Logan, Ohio to Don and Kathryn Phillips. The family moved to Arizona in 1944 where Carol graduated from North Phoenix High School class of 1948. Carol relocated to Payson in 1958 where she and first husband Robert owned Payson Auto Supply. Carol was active in the community and served as Payson Chamber of Commerce President from 1966 to 1967. Carol returned to Phoenix in 1970 and worked as a bookkeeper for a metal products company until 1987 when she moved to Cottonwood with the love of her life Alfred Koontz, who preceded her in death by just 82 days. Carol loved to hike and travel. She hiked in Germany with the Sierra Club and vacationed in Switzerland, Italy, and Mexico, as well as many of the states. She loved art and was a painter. She loved music and played the guitar. She was a Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce volunteer for many years and kept a lifelong journal until Alzheimer’s took her memory. She is survived by sons Steve Mercer (Karen) of Clarkdale and Neal Mercer (Donna) of Oregon City, Oregon, six grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother Neal Phillips, a son Bruce Mercer, and her husband Al Koontz. No funeral services are planned. Information provided by family members.
