Close call for six in highway crash

SEDONA -- Occupants of a king-cab pickup with six passengers were lucky that they were using seatbelts after a serious T-bone accident destroyed the front end of their vehicle Sunday at 1:30 p.m..

The passenger vehicle had the right of way when passing under the freeway from SR 179 onto Beaver Creek Road.

At the same time, a southbound commercial semi truck left the Interstate, but its brakes had failed and the truck could not stop for the stop sign.

The car smashed into the moving semi in a t-bone fashion and the entire front end of the car, including the instrument panel, were sheared off.  The vehicle then rolled down an embankment about 50 feet landing up right.

All passengers were wearing seat belts and were able to get out by themselves.  Bystanders had the two most injured, the driver and another front seat passenger, lie down until emergency crews arrived from Montezuma-Rimrock FD.

Four of the six passengers were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.
