Local roots have grown stronger with time. Angel and Juanita Vargas will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on July 20, 2012. Angel (Alvarez) Vargas the son of Guadalupe Alvarez and Antonio Vargas, grew up at the Alvarez Ranch in Sycamore Canyon. He met Juanita Guerrero, who was born and raised in Jerome, when he was a child. Juanita’s parents were Carlota Madrid and Jose Guerrero. The couple eloped to Quartzsite in 1952. They also remarried at the Catholic Church in Cottonwood a few years later. On their 50th Wedding anniversary, they renewed their vows and celebrated with many family members and old friends at the American Legion. During their marriage, Angel has served his country in the Army and National Guard. Juanita has been a homemaker and a very involved mother of four; Angel Robert Vargas (Elizabeth), Susan Vargas Frank (Gary), David Anthony Vargas (Mary), and Loretta Vargas Donovan (William). Angel & Juanita have several grandchildren; Angel David, Angel Ahmad, Carla, Anthony, Levi, Jaise, Lacey, Corey, David and Angelina. The couple has a few great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. They moved when needed due to military orders, but spent most of their time in Flagstaff before returning to the Verde Valley upon retirement from Navajo Army Depot in Bellemont in the late 1980s.
