The Yavapai College, Verde Valley Campus, Commencement took place for the first time in the new Pavilion space on Friday evening in Clarkdale. The kilt-wearing Mesa Caledonian Pipe Band led the Processional of graduates down the walk to their seats in front of the stage. Verde Campus Dean, Tom Schumacher opened the commencement with welcoming remarks, and introduced the evening's speakers. Dr. Gino Romeo gave the Faculty Address, while Sophia Serrano, who completed her Associate of Arts degree with a 3.9 GPA, performed the Student Address. Both spoke of the life-changing opportunities they experienced attending a community college. Dr. Greg Gillespie, Vice President for Instruction and Student Services, presented the class of 2012, beginning the Conferral of Degrees with the assistance of Dr. Dale Fitzner, District Governing Board Chair. After closing remarks by Yavapai College President Dr. Penelope Wills, the Mesa Caledonian Pipe Band led the fresh graduates of 2012 down the walkway and into a promising future.
