A Day of Remembrance (with photo gallery)

The Verde Valley Senior Center in Cottonwood held a special lunch program for Patriots Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance on Tuesday, September 11. Mayor Diane Joens, Verde Valley Ambulance EMS Chief Kim Moore, Fire Chief Mike Kuykendall, Fire Marshall/EMT Rick Contreras and Police Commander Gary Eisenga all spoke at the assembly, offering different perspectives on the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and how those events shaped current first responder practices. There was also a moment of silence to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that infamous day. Westcott Funeral Home sponsored the lunch as well as a special movie screening at CMS and Mingus HS later in the day. The discretionary day of remembrance was enacted into law in 2001 in observance of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. VVN/Jon Pelletier
