COTTONWOOD - Catholic Charities Community Services received a belated Easter blessing from Mtn. View United Methodist Church.

The church donated $2,694 from its special Easter offering to Catholic Charities for its new Forward Steps program.

The funds will be used to purchase basic household items such as toiletries, linens, laundry and cleaning supplies for nine units of subsidized housing for disabled and homeless individuals and families in the Verde Valley.

"We have worked with Catholic Charities for many years and know the difference they make to those who are homeless in and around our community," said Henry Mellon, missions chair for Mtn. View. "With no shelter available for the homeless of our community, Catholic Charities' Forward Steps program is crucial."

Forward Steps is a new Catholic Charities program which grew out of the lack of homeless shelters in the Cottonwood community.

The program provides permanent supportive housing for disabled and chronically homeless individuals and families. In addition to housing, clients receive case management and build their skills and resources as they work towards a more stable situation and securing housing of their own.

Mtn. View has worked with Catholic Charities for more than five years, including providing hot meals for Picnic in the Park and has made a monthly $100 donation to help The Loft, Catholic Charities' day center where homeless individuals and families can shower, do laundry, make a hot meal and use internet and phone services to connect with family and look for work.

"Mtn. View United Methodist Church has been a supporter of our community programs for years," said Catholic Charities Program Director Carol Quasula. "They really have helped us with our new "Forward Steps" permanent supportive housing program by helping our residents get the necessary household items to make them comfortable, and in the long run, to help them transition to into housing of their own."
