Monday at 11 a.m. Jennifer Pharr will recount stories from her 46-day, record-breaking trek on the Appalachian Trail at a special presentation at the Hike House, 431 SR 179, in Sedona. Her rousing adventure through nature and ability to overcome all odds is guaranteed to leave listeners inspired. Jennifer is also the founder and owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company where she strives "to make the wilderness accessible and enjoyable through written and spoken word, instruction and guiding." She is the author of five books.

Game & Fish volunteer training workshop
The Arizona Game and Fish Department is offering a training workshop for those interested in volunteering with the department. The workshop will be held on Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Flagstaff Game and Fish office located at 3500 S. Lake Mary Road.
During this workshop there will be a focus on certifying and training volunteers to assist with the sport fish education program, including fishing clinics, and the archery program. Space is limited, so all participants need to register on or before May 1 by 3 p.m. To register and gather more information about the workshop, call the Flagstaff Game and Fish office at (928) 774-5045. Blood Drive at Rainbow Acres
Give blood and save lives! Rainbow Acres, 2120 W. Reservation Loop Road, will host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. on Saturday in the Palmer Community Center. The public is welcome and encouraged to participate. No boring hospital cubicle or stuffy trailer here - relax in a spacious room with beautiful Verde Valley views while you donate, and get free fresh-baked cookies and juice afterwards.

Deception, Lies & Alibis
The Sedona Heritage Museum presents Michael Peach in a performance of his new original show "Deceptions, Lies & Alibis" on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Peach's show features his unique blend of original cowboy poetry with a tongue-in-cheek look at Arizona and local history.

Amigos del Verde Valley 'Lend a Hand' rescheduled
Amigos Del Verde Valley Volunteer Coalition's "Lend a Hand" Event," which was canceled by inclement weather last week, has been rescheduled for Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration and the complimentary volunteers' lunch will take place at the Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 330 Scenic Drive, Clarkdale.
Amigos community volunteers will revitalize and beautify yards (weed trimming, pruning and maintenance) for the elderly and persons with disabilities. Amigos volunteers will help eight homeowners residing in the city of Cottonwood, four homeowners in the Verde Villages, one homeowner in Clarkdale and one homeowner in Bridgeport at no cost.
Help clean up the Clear Creek Cemetery
The Clear Creek Cemetery is having a community clean up day on Saturday, May 3 starting at 9 a.m. If you aren't doing anything, come help make the cemetery look nice for Mother's Day and Memorial Day. Bring your garden tools and join us for the fun. If for any reason you can't help with the clean up, donations are always needed for upkeep. If you do come out and help us or make a donation to us on that Saturday, you can enter a drawing for a free eye exam at Camp Verde Eye Care.
Fiesta at Spirit of Joy
Come to the annual Fiesta Dinner at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church on Saturday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be a traditional Mexican dinner and virgin margaritas. A mariachi band will add to the festivities. A silent auction will benefit World Hunger and the Spirit of Joy Building Fund. Tickets are $15 adult, and $7.50 child.

Cottonwood Community Band performs 'Musical Tour of America'

Join the Cottonwood Community Band as it makes a Musical Tour of America with music about America and Americans when it presents its spring concert in Sedona and Cottonwood. The Sedona concert is May 4, 3 p.m. at the Rock of Ages Lutheran Church, 390 Dry Creek Road in Sedona. The band will repeat the concert on May 11 at 3 p.m. at the Mingus Union High School Auditorium 1801 E Fir St. in Cottonwood. Both concerts are free and open to the public. Slusser to walk 75 miles for Red Cross
Former United Christian School principal Al Slusser will walk 75 miles through the Verde Valley to raise money for the American Red Cross. It is his fourth long-distance trek. Slusser, 75 years of age, wants to give back to the Red Cross for helping his family after their Flagstaff mobile home was destroyed in a fire in the middle of the night.
Slusser's journey will begin at the Jerome Fire Station and end May 11 at the Verde Valley Fire District Station 31 in Cottonwood. Tax-deductible donations in honor of the Red Cross Verde Valley Benefit Walk may be made out to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter and mailed to 6135 N. Yavapai County District 2 Supervisor Tom Thurman will address the Cornville Community Association at their regular monthly meeting at Oak Creek School. With him will be several department directors who will update residents on their plans for the Verde Valley and listen to residents concerns. Cottonwood Culture Challenge
AZ Culture, in partnership with the Cottonwood Economic Development Council, Old Town Center for the Arts, Old Town Association, and Local First AZ will present the Cottonwood Culture Challenge, which will take place in historic Old Town Cottonwood and will feature a scavenger hunt/reality video project and contest involving over 200 participants and will include activities such as, wine & beer tasting, skydiving and horseback riding (on a first come first serve basis), art demonstrations, historic tours, food sampling, and live music & entertainment.

Free chicken dinners for veterans
Harry's Hideaway Restaurant in Cornville is going to give away a whole roasted chicken dinner to the first 100 veterans or current members of the Armed Forces that show up at 11:30 a.m. on Armed Forces Day, when they open for lunch.
Because they are such a small restaurant, they will run out! But they will pass out vouchers to those that don't get a chicken dinner on this day. Time to register for Adult Co-Ed Softball
Camp Verde Parks & Recreation announces the start of registration for another season of Adult Co-Ed Softball. This league plays Monday & Wednesday nights starting June 16. Each team fields an equal number or majority of women and plays for 7 innings or 55 minutes. Teams will play a minimum 9 game season followed by a playoff tournament. This is a great opportunity for adults to get outside and enjoy the exercise, camaraderie and competition. Play under the light at Butler Park with your friends and co-workers. Registration for Camp Verde Parks & Recreation's British Soccer Camp June 2-6 is still available. This co-ed camp is available in either full or half day and ages 3-16. This opportunity is in partnership with Challenger Sports, the #1 soccer camp provider in the country. House of Ruth hosts Baby Bottle Boomerang

House of Ruth Pregnancy Care Center is hosting a Baby Bottle Boomerang fund-raiser. When you insert a check into a baby bottle or fill a bottle with currency or coins, you are helping to provide free pregnancy testing, counseling, education, maternity and baby supplies and a hand of friendship to a woman in crisis.
Just stop by the House of Ruth, 1198 Mingus Ave., in Cottonwood, during office hours, pick up a baby bottle, fill it with your loose change or a check, and bring it back to the House of Ruth by May 11.

Cottonwood Public Library's Call to Authors

The Cottonwood Public Library is in search of local Verde Valley authors to participate in the 2014 Author's Forum. This second Author's Forum will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cottonwood Parks and Recreation Center at 150 S. Sixth St. Author registration ends July 11.
The purpose of this forum is to gather several local authors in one place to bring attention to the fact that the Verde Valley offers excellent literary talent. As an author, you have the opportunity to sell your books, chat with patrons, and personalize their copy of your book with your signature.
