Northern Arizona Healthcare now operates the Verde Valley's first hospice house at 421 N. Willard St. in Cottonwood.
The home is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by compassionate, personal caregivers who are trained by Northern Arizona Hospice, a service of Northern Arizona Healthcare. Care teams, which include board-certified physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, therapists and volunteers, develop a care plan for each patient and his or her family to help them face the challenges of life's last days with dignity, peace, and comprehensive support.
The team provides a variety of services and care options to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of residents and their families.
The home features 10 patient rooms, each with a private bath, outdoor patio and views of the red rocks. It has a large common kitchen and gathering area, as well as a spacious sitting room for patients and families to spend time together. There is a meditation room for prayer and reflection. In addition, the home hosts a physician consultation room along with a nurse's station and office.
Northern Arizona Hospice also offers services in patients' homes for those a terminal illness who have chosen to shift the focus of care from cure to comfort. A terminal illness is one that, if left to follow its natural course, leads to a life expectancy of six months or less.
Hospice care focuses on the patient's comfort while also offering family support. Northern Arizona Hospice has served Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, and the greater Verde Valley areas since 1984, and is the only local nonprofit hospice organization.
