Obituary: Bertha E. Monroe

Bertha E. Monroe, 86, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Christmas Eve, 2013. A resident of Camp Verde for 70 years, Bertha was the only daughter of Elmer and Chrissie Kilby of Ritter OR.

Born in Centralia WA, Bertha spent her early school years in Pleasant Valley and Baker City OR, before moving to AZ with her family when she was 16. Bertha had 6 brothers. Bertha attended Camp Verde High School before marrying AZ native Gale Monroe soon after his return from military service in WWII. Bertha and Gale had 4 children. Their son, Mike went to the Lord in 1995.

Surviving Bertha are Mary (Patty) and Molly of Midvale ID, and Margaret of Camp Verde, 8 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

Bertha was an LPN before 'retiring' to run a 100 head cattle allotment with Gale on Squaw Peak mountain. Bertha became a whole-hearted, single-minded servant of the Lord Jesus Christ at the death of her son Mike, founding the Camp Verde Cowboy Church with her family, and tenderly nurturing it for 12 years. Most mornings would find her with her Bible, coffee (3 creamers), and apple pie at McDonald's, reading the Word and ministering to strangers.

In 2006 Bertha bought her daughters 140 acres of 'Promise Land' in Idaho, to their delight. Molly, Patty, and her husband live there now. Bertha remained very active all of her life. This fall she spent in Idaho metal detecting, rock hunting, even stacking wood in the woodshed for winter. She had all of her Christmas gifts for the great grandchildren ready to give before the Lord called her home.

Bertha's life was a tribute to pioneer toughness and the power of God to transform willing hearts into His image. Her favorite scripture, in the struggles of this life, was Romans 8:28 - "And we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose."

Services will be Saturday January 4, 2014 at 10:00AM at First Assembly of God, 918 General Crook Trail, Camp Verde.
