COTTONWOOD - Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies were sent to East Silver Leaf Trail in Verde Village Wednesday night, where they found a 21-year-old man with a serious head injury, covered in blood.
EMS personnel treated the victim, who told authorities that 48-year-old Randy Stewart assaulted him with a "machete" after he refused to buy Stewart's vehicle.
Stewart allegedly struck the victim on the back of his head, arm and hand. The bloody man barricaded himself in another room in the suspect's home while Stewart fled.
Deputies got information from two witnesses who were home but initially asleep at the time of the attack.
Within a short time, deputies located and stopped Stewart driving his white Ford F-150 pickup along State Route 260 near Cherry Road.
Police said there was blood on Stewart's clothing and inside his vehicle. The knife was also located and contained blood evidence.
Stewart initially refused to discuss the incident and was placed under arrest for aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. He remains in custody on a $35,000 bond in the Camp Verde Jail.
The victim was treated at Verde Valley Medical Center. Although his injuries were not life threatening, the cut to his scalp was serious and took about 45 minutes for medical staff to treat and close the wound. Detectives noted defensive wounds on the man.
Stewart later admitted that he had assaulted the victim for reasons beyond a dispute over property, but would not elaborate.
