COTTONWOOD -- Cottonwood Police were called to a fight in progress near East Birch and South Main Street. They found three women surrounding a man who was lying on the ground. The women were kicking, hitting, and scratching the man, according to the report.
Several feet away another woman, 27-year-old Francisca Lopez of Cottonwood allegedly was yelling at and assaulting a second man.
Police learned that the 44-year-old first man was walking in the area when Lopez drove up next to him and began swearing at him. He kept walking, but Lopez got out of her car and began hitting the man. He videotaped the incident with his cell phone, but began to run away from the area to avoid further conflict.
He then called his 47-year-old brother, who lived in the area, to tell him of the assault. When the brother left his house, another vehicle pulled next to him where the three women got out and began hitting the brother, knocking him to the ground.
As the first victim went to go help for his brother, he was then assaulted and punched by Lopez a second time. According to the officer's report, the three women were "violently attacking" the man on the ground.
Lopez was charged with assault and disorderly conduct per domestic violence. Maria Meraz-Madrid, 50, Rosa Meraz, 48, and Rosa Ballesteros, 30, were all charged with assault. All four were booked into the Yavapai County Jail. The victims suffered only minor injuries.
