CORNVILLE -- Cornville Road was closed for investigation Saturday after a woman participant in the MS bike run was struck by a vehicle.

The accident occurred near Beaverhead Flat Road, about 12:30 Saturday afternoon. Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai Sheriffs Office, said the woman rider was struck by a van driven by an elderly man.

A father and daughter, riding a tandem bike near the woman and reportedly friends of the 48-year-old victim, also got caught in the melee as the van returned to its lane to avoid an approaching car. They suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at the Verde Valley Medical Center.

The 48-year-old woman was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center where she is reportedly in critical condition after needing care for life-threatening injuries.

More than 600 bicyclists were on the roads in the Verde Valley as part of a two-day fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis.
