Verde Valley Newspapers wins state awards

Verde Valley Newspapers received nine awards in its non-daily category at the Arizona Newspaper Associations annual Fall Convention on Sept. 20. VVN is comprised of The Verde Independent, The Bugle and Kudos, along with special publications.

In the Excellence in Advertising competition, VVN's "Fresh Start (Welcome Home)" won for Best Special Section. Advertising staff members Christi Myers and Michele Adams won first place in "Most Effective Use of Small Space" for the Airpark Animal Hospital ad.

VVN took second in Best Classified Section.

In the Better Newspapers Contest, VVN won first place in Editorial Page Excellence and for its Special Section publication Kudos. The newswpaper took third in General Excellence.

Staff reporter Bill Helm took second place in the Best News Photo category for his shots of police training at Camp Verde High School, entitled "Preparing for the Worst."

VVN took third place in Departmental News and Copywriting and also third place for the website verdenews.com.

This year 47 newspapers and seven high schools entered the competition. Awards were announced at the Chaparral Suites in Scottsdale.
