VERDE VALLEY - Starting on August 4, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot national monuments will increase entrance fees for visitors to fund important maintenance and improvement projects within the parks.
"This modest increase in fees will allow us to continue to protect, preserve and share the special places of Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments with current visitors and future generations," said Dorothy FireCloud, superintendent. "After carefully considering the impact of a fee increase on visitors and community members, we came to the conclusion that this is the right course of action to improve facilities and services important to visitors."
Entrance fees have supported a wide range of projects that improve the park and visitor experiences, including rehabilitating the visitor center, updating trailhead signs, developing and installing exhibits, improving park water systems, and providing ranger-led programs. Additional revenue from this fee increase will be utilized for improving ADA accessibility.
In the fall of 2014, the National Park Service conducted a nationwide review of entrance fees. To solicit public input, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot launched a civic engagement campaign in November 2014.
During the public comment period, the park received thirteen formal comments. While some opposed, the majority of the comments received were in support of the fee increase as long as the fees collected were being utilized to improve the park.
As an additional option for visitors, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments are offering a new Annual Park Pass.
The pass is $30 and is valid for entrance fees at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments only. The pass is effective for 1 year for the pass holder and three persons, 16 and older.
