COTTONWOOD -- Open since January, Whipped Coffee and Pastry at Mingus Avenue and Main Street offers one of Cottonwood's first drive-up organic coffee spots.

Owners Charlene and Josh Jones have been Verde Valley residents on and off for decades, and decided to open a drive-up coffee shop to fill a need in the area.

"I was looking for a space and there were really no buildings in town that are accessible to be a drive thru," she said.

With the help of a local entrepreneur, Jones said she found the space behind Main Stage. The shop has been selling Prescott-based Corvus Coffee Roasters organic coffee since early January.

Jones said Corvus coffee doesn't have the bitter taste many other organic brands have.

"I had to look hard," she said. "It took a while to find organic coffee that hasn't been put through a chemical wash."

Sales have been steady, but Jones said business has hit a plateau due to slow afternoon sales.

To combat that, Jones said she and a Cornville baker are working to add desserts to the menu. Coffee sales are going toward building a kitchen for the shop.

For now, Jones said customers have been taste-testing a limited selection of pastries including a carrot cake, chocolate mousse and mandarin orange cheesecake.

Gluten-free chocolate chip cookies are also on the menu, but Jones said catering to that specific dietary need isn't going to be the focus.

"We're trying to do everything as natural as possible, without chemicals and aspartame," she said.

Whipped is located at 1621 East Mingus Avenue, and is open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
