COTTONWOOD – The Mingus Union girls basketball team went full throttle from the opening tipoff Friday, jumping to a 16-1 first-quarter advantage and cruising home for a 42-33 win over visiting Prescott.
The win gives the Mingus girls a 4-2 season record.
Sophomore Darien Loring paved the way for Mingus with 17 points on 33-percent shooting, including a trio of treys. Consistent senior Destiny Razo added 9 points and senior Emily Bauers added 8 points on dead-eye 4-for-6 shooting from the field. Bauers was equally strong on the defensive end of the floor with five steals on the night.
Junior Nikki Zielinski controlled the boards, especially on the defensive end of the floor to kick-start the Mingus fast break. Zielinski had 9 rebounds on the night.
Next up for the Mingus girls is a road game Tuesday, Dec. 13, against Washington.

Mingus boys and girls soccer fall to Coronado
Both the Mingus boys and girls soccer teams came up on the short end in Friday games against Coronado High School. On the boys side, the Marauders lost Friday’s home non-conference game against Coronado by a score of 2-0. Mingus is 0-3-1 on the season.
Coronado’xs effort was paced by two goals by Martin Martinez and a pair of assists courtesy of Edgar Hernandez.
The Mingus girls were on the road against Coronado and came up short 1-0. Mingus is now 4-2 on the season. Coronado evened things up at 2-2.
