Mingus Marauders win nine separate events at State Qualifying Meet at Sedona Red Rock High School

SEDONA- 11 teams converged on Sedona Red Rock High School Wednesday afternoon for the Sedona Friendship Meet and for a chance to qualify for the State Meet on May 5th and 6th at Mesa Community College.

Camp Verde and Mingus Union both had great days as they were able to see what their upper classmen had to offer as well as what the future might hold for both programs.

All events were separated into Varsity and Freshman/Sophomore competitions as competition was stressed on all levels.

MINGUS UNION

The Marauders turned in great performances Wednesday afternoon, as they were able to win nine separate events at both the Varsity and Freshman/Sophomore level.

On the girls' side, Megan Goettl took home first place honors in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.76 and took third in the 3200 meters with a clocking of 13:26.52.

At the Freshman/Sophomore level, freshman Meg Babcock turned in two great performance in the 800 and 1600 meter races taking first place in both with times of 2:47.76 and 6:10.52.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Katelyn Prouty, Hannah Devore, Holly Johnson and Auli Hanks earned 1st place honors with a clocking of 52.90. Hanks also turned in great performances in two field events, taking home 1st place in the long jump with a leap of 15-04.75 and the junior earned second place in the high jump with a jump of 4-10.00.

The Marauders also got great performances from sophomore Hanna DeVore who placed second in the 100m hurdles race with a time of 18.72 and turned in a time of 1:06.10 in the 400 meter race which was good enough for a third place finish.

Junior Holly Johnson took second place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.63 and Katelyn Prouty was just under a second behind her which earned her earned her a second-place finish on the Freshman/Sophomore level.

On the boys side for the Marauders, junior Trevor Galloway senior Chance Gribauskas turned in the only first place finishes for individual events for the Marauders. Galloway earned his 1st place in the discus with a throw of 128-10, while Gribauskas pole vaulted a height of 12-00.

The 4 x 200 meter relay team of Alejandro Stabreff, Trevor Galloway, Brandon Gemmil, and Alex Nelson ran a time of 1:39.74, earning them the only other first place finish on the boys' side.

The 4 x 100 team of Juan Ruiz, Johnathan Jung, Fabian Navarro, and Jordan Prouty earned second place honors with a time of 46.16.

Senior Joseph Sandoval earned second in the 3200 meter race and third in the 1600 meter race, while teammate Ryan Alexander took fifth in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:!4.88 and second in the 400 meter race with a time of 54.44.

The Marauders will be back on the track on April 1st at the Scottsdale Distance Classic.

CAMP VERDE

The Cowboys, who are a very young team sporting 14 freshmen and five every other class, earned four 1st place finishes at the freshmen/sophomore level of the meet.

On the girls' side of the meet for the squad from Camp Verde, seniors Alyssa Watkins and Allee Drake earned second and third place finishes in both the discus and the shotput. In both events the two seniors were out thrown by Sedona's Hannah Ringel. Watkins threw 98-03 in the discus and 31-03 in the shotput while Drake turned in throws of 90-06 and 29-10.25.

Senior Laramie Mahan turned earned a fourth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 14-02.

In the freshmen/sophomore division the 4x400 meter relay team of Eidith and Eliana Paniagua, Corina Crittenden, and Karyme Guzman placed second with a time of 5:31.82.

On the boys' side, sophomore Nate Schultz turned in a great performance for the Cowboys in the freshmen/division, winning both the long jump, triple jump, and placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 18.89.

Matthew Wade, another sophomore for the Cowboys, was another winner as he took home the discus with a throw of 103-03.

The final freshmen/sophomore victors was the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Jarred Bush, Daniel Carley, Camron Mason, and Logan Pratt, who turned in a time of 48.85.

The Cowboys are back on the track Friday, March 25 as they head to the Mogollon HS Early Meet which starts at 10 a.m.
