New Mingus Union girls basketball coach Frank Nevarez has at least one thing in common with legendary crooner Johnny Mercer.
Nevarez likes to Accentuate the Positive.
After his Marauder girls team opened the season Tuesday with a convincing 53-40 win over Dysart on the road, Nevarez said, “We’re 1-0. We’re off to a great start. I love the season so far.”
He had good reason to be positive. The Mingus girls were fast out of the gate Tuesday and never looked back. “We basically led from start to finish. We played very aggressively for all four quarters,” said Coach Nevarez.
With senior guard Destiny Razo pouring in 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers, the Marauders claimed their first win of the season with an offensive mind-set. Junior forward Nikki Zielinski consistently cleared the boards to fuel Mingus fast breaks and sophomore shooting guard Darien Loring “was clutch with free throws down at the end of the game,” said Nevarez.
Next up for the Mingus girls, the Marauders will put their 1-0 record on the line when they travel to Cactus for a non-league contest on Tuesday, November 29. Mingus will battle a Cobras team coming off a 99-31 non-league loss to Mesquite (Gilbert, AZ). The Cobras record now stands at 1-1.
