VOCA proposes home rental restrictions

The Arizona State Legislature passed a law, effective January 1, 2017, that prohibits Cities and Counties from restricting the amount of time a homeowner can rent their property. VOCA has always relied on Yavapai County law that restricts residential home rentals to 30 days or more. (All property owners in VOCA received notice of this County law in their information packet when they purchased their property.)

Since the County will soon no longer legislate or enforce this ordinance, it is up to homeowner associations to establish their own rules regarding short-term rentals.

Complaints from neighbors of VOCA short-term rental properties include unruly guests, loud parties, excessive parked cars and other grievances. The Board feels strongly that to protect the quiet, non-commercial and strictly residential character of the VOCA community we need to act quickly to propose an amendment be added to our governing documents.

This amendment would require a 30-day minimum stay for all residential property rentals within VOCA. It would also establish a meaningful fine structure to deter homeowners from renting on a less than 30-day basis and require VOCA to enforce the new amendment.

By early October, all VOCA property owners will have received a paper ballot. The Board recommends that you vote FOR THE LEASING AND SCHEDULE OF FINES AMENDMENT that will ban short-term rentals within the Village of Oakcreek Association. If you are a member of VOCA, please mail in or drop off your ballot so we have enough votes cast to establish a quorum and a valid election on this important amendment issue.

We have had three very successful Pickleball clinics this past month and interest is strong for this new sport. There will be a dedication of the new courts on October 15, starting at Noon. To reserve a court and to find out more about Tennis and Pickleball at the VOCA Community Center, please contact the VOCA office and Nancy Shelley at nshelley@vocaonline.com.

Now under new management, a new menu is in place and daily specials are offered at the Redstone Bar and Grill in the Oakcreek Country Club clubhouse. Hours are from 8am to 7pm every day except Friday, when they're open til 8. Drop by and experience Redstone, where locals and golfers come for good service, good food and drinks, all at reasonable prices.
