RIMROCK – Beaver Creek School District will begin the new school year with the well-deserved designation as a Yavapai Healthy School.
On May 25, the Yavapai Healthy School (YHS) partnership presented its top honor of Yavapai Healthy School of-the-year to Beaver Creek School District.
Micca Martinez, Special Programs and Wellness Coordinator for the school district, accepted the award.
According to the Yavapai Healthy School Partnership Coordinator, and Yavapai County Community Health Services Health Education Section Manager Carol Lewis, Beaver Creek School was recognized “for investing in the health and wellness of the school community and always going the extra mile for their students.”
Earlier in the year, YHS encouraged schools in Yavapai County to apply for the designation by sharing their efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of their students.
“Beaver Creek stood out to the coalition as truly going above and beyond in making health a priority in the classroom,” Carol Lewis said. “These efforts extend well into the community making Beaver Creek School’s wellness program exceptional.”
The following are just some of the health-related services offered by Beaver Creek School District:
-Provides free food distribution twice a month to the community
-Coordinates a weekly food pantry that serves nutritional choices for students to take home.
-Educates on the following health issues in the classroom and the community: drug prevention, early childhood education, employee wellness, healthy relationships, mental health, nutrition, parenting classes, physical activity, sexual health, dental health, hygiene, sun safety, bullying, and bicycle safety.
-Implements three “wellness weeks” throughout the year, with a concentrated focus on health education and provide health screenings for students and staff
-Provides fresh fruit and vegetable options to students in the cafeteria
-Offers opportunities for physical activity, in the classroom and after school including a weekly after school open gym
-Implements and encourages Walk to School Days
-Students are encouraged to take care of themselves and others through chalked messages on their campus sidewalks.
Lewis stated, “Beaver Creek, while challenged by their location and available resources, actively seeks ways to promote health and wellness of not only the students and school staff but the community as a whole. The overall culture of health at Beaver Creek School is truly a sight to behold. The community should be very proud.”
Beaver Creek School students and staff will receive various prizes and accolades in the coming school year from this honor. Yavapai Healthy Schools (YHS) partnership is a coalition of over twenty community partners who work to promote healthy living in our schools.
