Our family along with several others from the Verde Valley had the privilege this past weekend of witnessing Tom Wokasch’s induction into the Arizona coaches Hall of Fame.
Coach Wokasch won 535 duals with an unheard of 81-percent win ration, and won 5 consecutive state titles. His teams won the region championship 13 times. The 2007 state championship team also won an AIA team academic award with a 3.61 GPA making AZ history. Coach Wokasch was named National High School Athletic Coaches’ Association Region 8 Coach of the Year three times, State Coach of the Year twice and Region Coach of the year eight times.
Coach Wokasch invested much of his life to his athletes, even tutoring them after school hours to make sure they were successful in the classroom as well as on the mat. He taught them skills for life not just for wrestling and modeled it for them; showing them how to handle even unjust adversity when it comes your way.
During the summer months, Coach Wokasch spent more time starting, organizing and running multiple wrestling events like the Freshman State Tournaments and the USA wrestling tournaments, bringing the opportunity for wrestlers from all over the Southwest to hone their skills and bringing revenue into the Valley as the teams and their parents stayed in the hotels, ate in the restaurants and explored our area.
His induction into the AZ COACH’S HALL OF FAME shows that the cream really does rise to the top.
Congratulations Tom! Well done and well deserved.
