Letter: Panhandlers present wrong image for Cottonwood

As long time citizen of Cottonwood, I have seen a lot of changes to this area and the verde valley in general. But it wasn’t until recently, or within the last six months, that I have noticed a real negative impact on our community.

These so-called pan handlers that stand on the street asking for handouts is a stain on the community. Not only do they stand there and ask for handouts, but on occassion, I have seen them walk up to cars, tap on windows, and expect people to hand them things.

Is there nothing that can be done? Is there no way to control all these people?

James Smith

You're joking, right "Mr Smith?" What, exactly, are you doing about it? Your question about how to control these people is utterly disgusting. How about we control black hearted, intolerant and no doubt racists douches like you instead? You want to do something, try stepping up like a decent human being and offering to help one or more of them get on their feet. Give them a job, a good meal. Invite one or more to your house and let them get a shower, wash their laundry.

People like you are everything wrong in this world.

Either YOU stand up and help your fellow man or go crawl back under your rock. Nobody owes you anything and people are not cattle to be controlled. it's not up to others to "do something" about it - YOU do something about it if it's that inconvenient for you to see someone who's lost it all, has no place to go and no help or support.

I wager a million five you're a right wing idiot Trump supporter...who thinks other people are the elites. #idiocy #ignorance #douche

The City is is supporting a joint venture, Cottonwood Cares, with Habitat for Humanity, the Chamber of Commerce and MATFORCE to educate the public to support about not giving money to panhandlers but to donate to Cottonwood Cares. They will then decide which helpful organizations to grant the money to. Part of that effort is educating the public that giving money directly to these panhandlers is the same as handing them drugs and alcohol. If they did not receive a financial benefit they would not continue to panhandle and would find someplace else to go. Of course not everybody will cooperate and therefore some type of law enforcement measure needs to be implemented to remove this blight from our city.

Cottonwood Cares has zero transparency. There's no means of contact, no names, it's anonymous with a payment option. Chances are they'll use the money for their own gain and not actually help anyone with it.

I've been there. I've tried to use state help and it's not help at all. It's a degrading, cruel, bunch of red tape bs that does NOT help in any manner. Not every panhandler is on drugs or is an alcoholic. Judging all of them is like judging all you christian sorts for being the intolerant asshats you truly are.

Yeah I feel the same way about giving money to governments and whiny educators.

I want to make sure my donated money is spent on drugs and alcohol. You people think your so freaking wonderful that we can tolerate you sober?!? My ancestors were some of the first white people to settle in the area, I think they would be ashamed of what has become of the place.

You only see it in the last 6 months? Guess you don't get out very much. As long as they don't pressure anyone I have no trouble with them being out I look at it this way If it wasn't for the grace of God you or I could be out their
