Camp Verde football falls to Gilbert Christian

Camp Verde lost to highly ranked Gilbert Christian to suffer their second loss in a row.

No. 29 Camp Verde (2-6, 1-3 Central) lost 53-14 to No. 5 Gilbert Christian (7-2, 3-2 Metro West). The defeat was the Cowboys’ fourth in their last five games.

After one quarter the Cowboys and Knights were tied 14-14, but Gilbert Christian scored 39 unanswered points in the final three quarters, including 26 in the second.

Gilbert Christian quarterback Nick Hershey was 21-for-35 passing for four touchdowns and 396 yards. Twelve Knights ran the ball for 159 yards on 24 carries.

Gilbert Christian rebounded after a 49-7 loss at Scottsdale Christian on Oct. 13. The No. 6 Eagles beat Camp Verde 42-0 on Sept. 1.

The Cowboys close out the season at No. 36 Sedona Red Rock (0-8, 0-4 Central) on Friday night at 7 p.m. Camp Verde leads the series against the Scorpions 7-6 since 2004.

Last year the Cowboys edged their rival 12-8 at home, snapping a four-game losing streak to that school up north.
