CAMP VERDE – The Camp Verde Unified School District has a “disproportionate amount of teachers in grants,” according to business manager Steve Hicks.
“We’re not the average district,” Hicks said.
With 86.8 full-time equivalent teachers, 16 are paid from grants, such as Title I, Title II and other federal project programs. The other 70.6 salaries are paid from the district’s Maintenance and Operations fund.
Why this matters is that when the Camp Verde school district proposed its fiscal year 2018-2019 budget to the district’s governing board on Tuesday, Hicks explained why his district’s teachers would only receive a 7.52 percent pay increase, despite Gov. Doug Ducey’s promise of a 10-percent raise.
Ducey’s financial commitment to teacher salary increases was based on each district’s Maintenance and Operations fund. But all teachers in the district, including those paid by grant money, deserve a raise, Hicks said.
“We have to spread our pot of money farther than the other schools,” Hicks said.
The topic of teacher raises was a big part of the district’s discussion Tuesday on the coming year’s budget, as the governing board voted to approve the district’s proposed – preliminary – budget of about $10.45 million.
The budget includes about $9.2 million for the Maintenance and Operations fund, about $940,000 for its Classroom Site fund, and about $290,000 for its Unrestricted Capital Outlay fund.
The 7.52-percent increase means that the average salary of all teachers employed by the district will increase about $3,200 from a year ago, according to the proposed budget.
