Yavapai College, Verde Valley Campus, 44th annual Commencement took place at the outdoor Pavilion space on Friday evening, May 9, in Clarkdale. The kilt-wearing Glendale Pipes and Drums led the Processional of graduates down the walk to their seats in front of the stage. Verde Campus Dean, James Perey, opened the commencement with welcoming remarks, and introduced the evening's speakers. Joan E. Fisher gave the Faculty Address, while Dorothy "Madison" Maher performed the Student Address. Both spoke of the life-changing opportunities they experienced attending Yavapai College and the obstacles they overcame to become successful students in the first place. Dr. Stuart Blacklaw, Vice President for Instruction and Student Services, presented the class of 2014, beginning the Conferral of Degrees with the assistance of Herald Harrington, District Governing Board Spokesman, and Yavapai College President Dr. Penny Wills. After closing remarks by President Wills, the Glendale Pipes and Drums led the graduates of 2014 out of the Chuck Mabery Pavilion to mark the end of the Commencement ceremony. Friends, family and faculty joined the graduates for desserts and refreshments catered by Jerona Java Café immediately following the Commencement.
