The event was officially kicked off by the arrival of the Roadrunner school mascot on the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Students were recognized for perfect grades and attendance, as well as excellence of character (the Verde Valley Fire Department was on hand to present Citizenship Awards) and scholastic improvement. Deftly switching between a variety of stringed instruments, folk legend McUen serenaded the audience with a set-list that included many folk standards and classic songs from the Dirt Band. Mingus Union High School Marauders win a close one at home last night 24-21. The win bumped Mingus's record up to 3-0. Mesquite is still searching for that first win as they fell to 0-3. This action is Mingus' first touchdown in the first quarter. VVN/Vyto Starinskas
Hang glider Randy Skywalker sails over Cottonwood in a hang glider last Saturday after launching from the USHGA Mingus Launch site at the top of Mingus Mountain. Union Pacific Railroad Line that ran from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Ogden., Utah., and is being recreated at the Wyoming Division Historical Societies building in Cornville. Designer and builder Allen Montgomery is working for owner Verryl Fosnight who is creating the amazing train museum featuring 7,000 feet of track, 125 locomotives, 2,000 rolling cars all set in the mid-1950s. Electrician Lenny Wyatt also built a Cheyenne roundhouse. The landscaping is as close as real as possible, as Montgomery has even brought 1,400 pounds of from sites in Utah and Wyoming. A community shred came to Cottonwood Saturday at the Credit Union West building as the secure mobile shred truck was busy destroying local paperwork brought in steadily during the three-hour event which also featured free food from the Merkins Vineyards Tasting Room & Osterea food truck Pizza Wagon, prizes and live radio. Local organizations had booths and the Mingus Union High School cheerleaders raised donations by washing cars and were presented a check by Credit Union West. VVN/Vyto Starinskas
The 5th annual Tilted Earth Festival returned to the banks of Oak Creek at the Page Springs Cellars Saturday. The weather was perfect in the woods next to the local vineyard as festival goers listened to music, sipped wine and ate dinner to four bands. VVN/Vyto Starinskas
The sun was out to shine on the Chevys at the 12 Annual Chevy Show at Larry Green Chevrolet in Cottonwood on Saturday. The Verde Valley Vettes Corvette Club presented the 12th Annual All Chevy Show with 18 trophy classes, food and soft drinks.
