A three-day, overnight workshop Healing of Memories for Veterans is a three-day overnight program held at the Franciscan Renewal Center. It was created by Rev. Father Michael Lapsley, SSM, an Anglican missionary priest who in 1990 suffered the loss of his hands and the sight in one eye from a letter bomb that was sent to him in Zimbabwe by a supporter of the pro-apartheid government in South Africa. He later founded the Healing of Memories Institute (). The program was designed to help victims of emotional, psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by war, human rights abuses, and other traumatic circumstances. The program has been held for over 250 veterans in Arizona with excellent results. Veterans who attend feel that the experience has been a major step in their healing process. The following quote is typical of the reaction of the vets after the program: “I have a better grasp of my experiences from my last deployment and the negative hold they have had on me. I feel as if I have made progress in working through these experiences, owning what I am, letting go of the rest and moving towards freedom and healing.” Retreat fee: Free for Veterans. Pre-registration required. Call Mike Wold, 651-687-9767.
