Young team expects to compete
The Camp Verde girls softball program will be younger than last year’s squad returning just four payers with varsity experience.
Coach Debbi Miller is looking for her few experienced players to lead by example.
Returning are Brianne Dugan, Amber Teague, Amber Beeler and Cheri Parnell.
Dugan will play short stop, Teague will catch, Parnell will be at first base, and Beeler will take care of things from the mound as pitcher.
“We will have a lot of speed on our team this year,” said Miller. “That will allow us to be very aggressive on the bases. We have players that are very good at laying down the bunt and with our speed this will hopefully be one of our strengths offensively.”
The Cowboys have several returning JV players, which will help bring strength to the young program. Several new players will also help round out the team.
“With a strong offense and defense we hope to be very competitive with the teams in our conference,” said Miller.
Conference teams include Chino Valley, River Valley, Parker, Wickenburg, Dysart, Seton, and Fountain Hills.
“”Our overall goal is to take our conference and win state,” said Miller. “We should be able to be one of the top-four teams in our conference. We’re looking forward to a very successful season both at the varsity level and the JV level.”
Assistant Coach Clint Teague will help Miller direct the teams energy towards a sound season. JV coach Ron Romero will look for the same success as Miller with his younger club.
“Each of these men has great knowledge and adds lots of strengths to our program,” said Miller.
